About Heddle Foundation

Weaver's Program

The legacy of Kerala textiles is a tale woven with the threads of history, culture, and remarkable craftsmanship. The intricate tapestry of handloom weaving in this South Indian region holds roots reaching far back in time, tracing its origins to ancient traditions.

The art of weaving in Kerala finds its historical resonance in the bygone eras, with evidence suggesting its existence dating back centuries. However, it was during various periods of flourishing trade and cultural exchanges that Kerala's textile industry truly thrived.

The unique interplay of influences from different regions and cultures contributed to the richness and diversity of Kerala's weaving tradition. It was a confluence of techniques, ideas, and materials that led to the evolution of distinctive handloom textiles in the region.

Rich Culture

In continuity with this rich cultural history, Weaver's Program supports design and marketing assistance for traditional weavers and hand block printers. This ongoing program encourages exciting new working relationships amongst weavers, block-printers, dyers, designers, and retailers from across India. This helps the artisans to meet consumers’ desires for innovative fabrics, especially in the higher-end fashion segments.

Our Mission

In particular, the infusion of South Indian weaving techniques, as well as influences from trade routes connecting Kerala to regions like the Middle East and Europe, contributed to the evolution of Kerala textiles. Skilled weavers incorporated innovative methods and designs, resulting in the creation of distinctive handloom textiles known for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and superior quality.
